La pittoresque ville de Stavelot est nichée au cœur de la vallée boisée de l'Amblève.
Stavelot doit son origine à saint Remaclus, qui y fonda un monastère bénédictin en 648. L'abbaye devint progressivement un centre de pouvoir religieux et temporel. Jusqu'à sa dissolution en 1795, elle gouverna en toute indépendance, à l'instar de la principauté épiscopale de Liège.
L'abbaye fut dissoute sous domination française. Les impressionnants bâtiments du monastère abritent aujourd'hui l'hôtel de ville et plusieurs musées. La ville fut durement touchée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Néanmoins, certaines rues conservent de magnifiques maisons à colombages.
