Die Limmat ist ein Fluss in der Schweiz. Sie bildet den bei Zürich beginnenden, 36 Kilometer langen unteren Flussabschnitt des circa 140 Kilometer langen Flusssystems Linth-Limmat. Sie mündet in die Aare und ist deren zweitgrösster Nebenfluss.
Früheste Belege des Flussnamens sind ad fluvium Lindimacum , de ripa Lindimagi fluminis , iuxta fluvium Lindemaci und cis Lindimacum . Formen auf -agt sind aus dem 15. und 16. Jahrhundert, solche auf -at erst nach 1500 bezeugt. Die dialektale Lautung Limig steht damit der ursprünglichen näher als das schriftsprachliche Limmat.
