Niederlahnstein liegt auf der rechten Rheinseite und auf der rechten Seite der Lahn, an der Mündung der Lahn in den Rhein.
Der Ort erhielt im Jahre 1322 die Stadtrechte. Niederlahnstein gehörte zum Engersgau und im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zum Herzogtum Nassau. Durch den preußisch-österreichischen Krieg wurde der Ort preußisch. Seit 1946 gehört Niederlahnstein zum Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz.
