Das Residenzschloss in Ludwigsburg wurde zwischen 1704 und 1733 unter der Herrschaft von Herzog Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg im Stil des Barock errichtet. Es ist eine der größten barocken Schlossanlagen Deutschlands.
1709 begannen die Planungen für die Stadt Ludwigsburg als typische barocke Planstadt, die den absolutistischen Anspruch des Herzogs unterstreichen sollte. Ab 1718 wurde die Stadt westlich des Schlosses errichtet. Zeitweise war Ludwigsburg anstelle Stuttgarts die Residenz- und Hauptstadt des Herzogtums Württemberg.
