Husum ist Kreisstadt des Kreises Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein. Theodor Storms Gedicht Die Stadt bescherte Husum den Beinamen „graue Stadt am Meer“.
Das Stadtgebiet von Husum erstreckt sich zu beiden Seiten der Husumer Mühlenau. Sie fließt durch das Stadtgebiet von Ost nach West und mündet vorgelagert ins Wattenmeertief der Hever. Im nördlich angrenzenden Außenbereich wurden 1495 zunächst der Porrenkoog und 1848 der Dockkoog zur Sicherung des Husumer Stadtgebiets eingedeicht. An beiden Kögen fließt die Husumer Mühlenau südlich angrenzend im nordfriesischen Wattenmeerbereich vorbei. Die Husumer Mühlenau wird durch eine Seeschleuse von der Nordsee abgekoppelt, so dass das Wasser im Gezeitengang nur begrenzt ins Stadtgebiet fließen kann.
