Zwönitz ist eine Bergstadt im sächsischen Erzgebirgskreis. Zusammen mit Elterlein bildet sie die Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Zwönitz mit Sitz in Zwönitz.
Die Stadt liegt im Mittleren Erzgebirge am Geyerschen Wald, etwa 25 km Luftlinie südwestlich von Chemnitz an der Quelle des Zwönitzbaches. Bis zur Grenze nach Tschechien sind es rund 30 km. Der höchste Punkt im Stadtgebiet liegt 653 m , der niedrigste Punkt 485 m ü. NN.
