Mühlhausen/Thüringen ist die Kreisstadt des Unstrut-Hainich-Kreises und zehntgrößte Stadt in Thüringen. Die Große kreisangehörige Stadt im Nordwesten des Bundeslandes liegt an der Unstrut, einem Nebenfluss der Saale, rund 55 km nordwestlich der Landeshauptstadt Erfurt und nimmt in der Raumordnung des Freistaates Thüringen den Rang eines Mittelzentrums mit Teilfunktionen eines Oberzentrums ein.

Im Mittelalter waren die Reichsstädte Mühlhausen und Nordhausen nach Erfurt die zweitmächtigsten Städte im Thüringer Raum . Die Mühlhäuser Kirmes, die jährlich mit 27 Kirmesgemeinden für eine Woche begangen wird, fand 1877 zum ersten Mal statt und ist die größte Stadtkirmes Deutschlands.
