Northeim ist eine Mittelstadt und selbständige Gemeinde in Südniedersachsen, Deutschland. Die ehemalige Hansestadt ist Sitz des Landkreises Northeim und erfüllt die Funktionen eines Mittelzentrums. In der Europastadt, die sich auf rund 145 km² Fläche erstreckt, leben rund 29.100 Einwohner . Flächenmäßig ist Northeim nach Einbeck die zweitgrößte Stadt Südniedersachsens.
Northeim liegt in Südniedersachsen im Niedersächsischen Bergland an den äußersten Südwestausläufern des Harzes bzw. einige Kilometer östlich des Sollings. Es befindet sich 20 Kilometer nördlich der Großstadt Göttingen. Durch das Stadtzentrum verläuft der 10. Grad östlicher Länge. Auf der Einkaufsstraße Breite Straße ist der Längengrad durch weiße Pflastersteine markiert.
