Die frühere Gemeinde liegt vier Kilometer südwestlich von Salzwedel. Die Nachbarorte sind Böddenstedt im Norden, Böddenstedter Mühle und Perver im Nordosten, Kricheldorf und Sienau im Osten, Brewitz und Dambeck im Südosten, Kuhfelde und Ferchau im Süden, Eversdorf im Südwesten, Groß Wieblitz im Westen sowie Klein Wieblitz, Klein Gerstedt, Wolfsmühle und Groß Gerstedt im Nordwesten.
Die Gemeinde Steinitz bestand aus den Ortsteilen Kemnitz und Ziethnitz mit dem Wohnplatz Phillips Kolonie.
