Ruhla ist eine Bergstadt in Westthüringen zwischen Eisenach und Schmalkalden. Der staatlich anerkannte Erholungsort liegt auf einer Höhe von 440 bis 530 Metern an der Nordseite des Thüringer Waldes am Rennsteig. Zur Stadt Ruhla gehören die Ortsteile Thal und Kittelsthal. Mit beiden Ortsteilen hatte die Stadt Ende 2009 gut 6200 Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 38,51 Quadratkilometern.
Der Name Ruhla soll von dem durch den oberen Ortsteil fließenden Bach Rolla hergeleitet sein. Die Rolla mündet in den Erbstrom, Namensgeber des Erbstromtals. In dieses Mittelgebirgskerbtal ist Ruhla eingebettet.
