Tornau gehörte bis 1815 zum kursächsischen Amt Düben. Durch die Beschlüsse des Wiener Kongresses kam der Ort zu Preußen und wurde 1816 dem Kreis Bitterfeld im Regierungsbezirk Merseburg der Provinz Sachsen zugeteilt, zu dem er bis 1944 gehörte.
Die Bundesstraße 2, die Leipzig und Wittenberg verbindet, führt durch Tornau. Die Landesstraße 130, die die Bundesstraßen 2 und 183/107 verbindet, kreuzt den Ort.
