Die Gemeinde hat eine Gesamtfläche von 1910,31 Hektar, davon sind 406,71 Hektar Wald, 1177,47 Hektar werden landwirtschaftlich genutzt und 131,26 Hektar sind bebaut. Im Norden der Gemeinde befindet sich ein Gewerbegebiet mit über 1000 Beschäftigten.
Der ursprüngliche Name Büttelbrunn besteht aus dem althochdeutschen Verb buddelen und dem althochdeutschen Wort brunno. Sie bedeuten „schäumen“ und „Quelle“. Der Ort wurde demnach an einer schäumenden Quelle errichtet. Als Bestimmungswort kommt aber auch der Personenname Butilo infrage. Dabei würde es sich um den ersten Siedler an der Quelle handeln. Der Namenszusatz Wald, der im Dialektnamen „Bidlbrunn“ nicht auftaucht, unterscheidet den Ort vom naheliegenden Gaubüttelbrunn.
