Lünen ist die größte Stadt des Kreises Unna im westlichen Westfalen im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg. Lünen gehört dem Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe sowie dem Regionalverband Ruhr an. Die ehemals kreisfreie Stadt mit ca. 88.000 Einwohnern ist heute ein Mittelzentrum, das durch seine Lage im nordöstlichen Ruhrgebiet und am südlichen Rand des Münsterlandes sowohl von industriellem als auch von ländlichem Einfluss geprägt ist. Lünen gehörte ab 1476 als sogenannte Beistadt dem mittelalterlichen Hansebund an und ist heute Mitglied im Hansebund der Neuzeit.
