Lünen è la città più grande del distretto di Unna nella Germania occidentale, nella regione dell'Arnsberg. Lünen è parte della Comunità di Vestfalia-Lippe e dell'Associazione regionale della Ruhr. La città, un tempo libera da distretti, con circa 88.000 abitanti, è oggi un centro medio, caratterizzato dalla sua posizione nella regione nord-orientale della Ruhr e al margine sud della Mühlviertel, sia per l'influenza industriale che per quella rurale. Lünen è stata parte della Lega Anseatica medievale a partire dal 1476 come cosiddetta città assistente ed è oggi membro della Lega Anseatica moderna.
