Elbtal liegt am Südhang des Westerwaldes oberhalb des Lahntals und im Nordwesten des Limburger Beckens. Die Bundesstraße 54 führt mitten durch das Gemeindegebiet.
Die Hügel zu beiden Seiten des Elbbachs waren schon in der Jungsteinzeit bewohnt; zahlreiche Funde von Steinwerkzeugen beweisen das. Die Ringwallanlage „Heidenhäuschen“ bei Hangenmeilingen wird auf die Hallstattzeit datiert.
