Bad Rothenfelde liegt wenige Kilometer südlich des Teutoburger Walds am Übergang zu Ostwestfalen und im Städtedreieck Bielefeld, Münster und Osnabrück. Höchste Erhebung ist der Kleine Berg an der westlichen Gemeindegrenze.
Bad Rothenfelde grenzt im Westen an Bad Laer, im Norden an Hilter am Teutoburger Wald, im Osten an Dissen am Teutoburger Wald sowie im Süden an die nordrhein-westfälische Stadt Versmold im Kreis Gütersloh.
