Die Gemeinde Schipkau liegt im südlichen Teil des Bundeslandes Brandenburg. Die Stadtgrenze Dresdens ist etwa 50 Kilometer entfernt, bis zum Schönefelder Kreuz an der Südgrenze Berlins sind es etwa 100 Kilometer. Die Gemeinde liegt inmitten der Niederlausitzer Braunkohlenregion.
Am 31. Dezember 2001 schlossen sich sechs bis dahin selbstständige Gemeinden zur Gemeinde Schipkau zusammen. Seitdem besteht Schipkau aus folgenden Ortsteilen:
