Kuppenheim liegt am Eingang des Murgtals im Nordschwarzwald, weswegen die Kommune neben „Knöpflestadt“ auch das „Tor zum Murgtal“ genannt wird. Schon mitten in der Stadt beginnt das Gelände aufgrund der Randlage zum Schwarzwald anzusteigen. Die Höhenunterschiede auf Kuppenheimer Gemarkung reichen von 118 m im Gewann „Unterer Eichelplan“ über 127 m in der Stadtmitte bis 297 m Höhe auf dem Hirschacker. In den Hügeln Kuppenheims konnte man bei entsprechender Wetterlage und klarer Sicht bis zu den 50 km entfernten Kühltürmen des Kraftwerks Philippsburg schauen. Die Kühltürme wurden inzwischen gesprengt.
