Kuppenheim ligger ved indgangen til Murgtal i Nordschwarzwald, hvorfor kommunen udover "Knöpflestadt" også kaldes "Porten til Murgtal". Allerede midt i byen begynder terrænet at stige på grund af beliggenheden i forhold til Schwarzwald. Højdevariationerne i Kuppenheim strækker sig fra 118 m i området "Unterer Eichelplan" over 127 m i byens centrum til 297 m højde på Hirschacker. I Kuppenheims bakker kunne man ved passende vejrforhold og klart udsyn se de 50 km fjerne køletårne ved kraftværket Philippsburg. Køletårnene er i mellemtiden blevet sprængt.
