Essen ist eine Großstadt im Zentrum des Ruhrgebiets und der Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr. Nach Köln, Düsseldorf und Dortmund ist Essen die viertgrößte Stadt des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen sowie eines der Oberzentren. Die kreisfreie Stadt im Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf zählt mit ihren 592.160 Einwohnern zu den zehn größten Städten Deutschlands. Essen ist als bedeutender Industrie- und Wirtschaftsstandort Sitz bekannter Großunternehmen und mit der Universität Duisburg-Essen auch Hochschulstandort. Im Jahre 1958 wurde die Stadt Sitz des neugegründeten Bistums Essen.
