Essen is een grote stad in het centrum van het Ruhrgebied en de metropolregio Rijn-Ruhr. Na Keulen, Düsseldorf en Dortmund is Essen de vierde grootste stad van de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen en een van de hoofdcentra. De zelfstandige stad in het regeringsdistrict Düsseldorf telt met zijn 592.160 inwoners tot de tien grootste steden van Duitsland. Essen is als belangrijke industrie- en bedrijfslocatie de zetel van bekende grote ondernemingen en met de Universiteit Duisburg-Essen ook een onderwijslocatie. In 1958 werd de stad de zetel van het nieuw opgerichte bisdom Essen.
