Der Name „Lurup“ findet seine erste Erwähnung im Jahr 1752 im Nienstedtener Kirchbuch. Damals sollen Fuhrleute nach einer langen Fahrt durch die Lüneburger Heide dem Ort seinen Namen gegeben haben: „Dor luert wi op!“ Die Satzbestandteile luert und op bildeten somit später den Namen Lurup.
In dieser Gegend soll sich der Überlieferung zufolge auch ein Wirtshaus namens „Luur Up“ befunden haben. Daneben gibt es die Vermutung, der Ortsname beschreibe den natürlichen Verlauf der Landstraße, die von Bahrenfeld aus leicht ansteigt .
