Frintrop ist der westlichste Stadtteil der Stadt Essen, wobei er an die Nachbarstädte Oberhausen und Mülheim an der Ruhr grenzt. Im Nordosten schließt sich der Essener Stadtteil Dellwig und im Süden der Stadtteil Bedingrade an.
Frintrop erstreckt sich über zwei Ebenen: das im Volksmund sogenannte Oberfrintrop mit der St.-Josef-Kirche in der Straße Himmelpforten, und Unterfrintrop mit dem Markt- und dem Leoplatz . Oben und unten ergibt sich aus der Randlage des Ortes am Südhang des Emschertals. Der Schildberg bietet eine Weitsicht über das Tal, wobei laut amtlichem Kataster der geographisch höchste Punkt zwischen Reck- und Frintroper Straße auf 87,2 m Höhe, und der niedrigste nahe der Straße Schemmannsfeld mit 36 m Höhe liegt.
