Der Odenwaldkreis ist ein Landkreis im äußersten Südosten des Landes Hessen und gehört als solcher zum Regierungsbezirk Darmstadt. Mit etwas weniger als 100.000 Einwohnern ist er der bevölkerungsärmste Landkreis Hessens.
Historisch gehörte das Kreisgebiet im Heiligen Römischen Reich überwiegend zur Grafschaft Erbach und zur Herrschaft Breuberg. 1806 wurde das Gebiet durch die Mediatisierung Teil des Großherzogtums Hessen. Im Zuge der Gebietsreform in Hessen erhielt der damalige Landkreis Erbach 1972 seine heutige Bezeichnung.
