Der Luftkurort Sontra ist als „Berg- und Hänselstadt“ bekannt, wobei „Bergstadt“ auf die Zeit der Stadt mit Kupferschiefer-Bergbau und „Hänselstadt“ auf die ehemalige Zugehörigkeit zur Hanse verweist. In der Stadt, die sich auf 111,29 km² Fläche erstreckt, leben 4542 inkl. Stadtteile: 7855 Einwohner.
Sontra liegt zwischen Bad Hersfeld , Kassel und Eisenach östlich des Stölzinger Gebirges, nördlich des Richelsdorfer Gebirges und westlich des Ringgaus. Durchflossen wird es von der Sontra, die bei Wehretal in die Wehre mündet, und der Ulfe, die beim Ortsteil Wichmannshausen in die Sontra mündet. Sontra gehört zum Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land.
