Schortens ist eine Stadt und selbständige Gemeinde im Landkreis Friesland in Niedersachsen. Die Gemeinde wurde 2005 zur Stadt ernannt und ist seitdem nach Varel die zweitgrößte Stadt im Landkreis Friesland. Seit dem 6. Dezember 2011 ist die Stadt ein staatlich anerkannter Erholungsort.
Schortens wurde erstmals 1158 als Scortinh erwähnt. Aus dem Jahre 1190 ist die Bezeichnung Scortinghe überliefert. 1354 wird das Dorf Scortinze genannt und 1420 Schortensze. Der Name ist eine Ableitung des Rufnamens Scroet oder Scoto mit dem affrikativen Kollektivsuffix -ingi, aus dem später das -ens wurde.
