Schönewörde liegt zwischen den Naturparks Südheide und Elm-Lappwald an der Ise. Die Gemeinde gehört der Samtgemeinde Wesendorf an, die ihren Verwaltungssitz in der Gemeinde Wesendorf hat.
Die Gemeinde wurde 1318 als Sconenworden erstmals urkundlich erwähnt; gehört zu den Siedlungen der jüngeren Rodeperiode ; in der Entwicklung wahrscheinlich beeinflusst durch den Zuzug aus Wüstungen wie Große Wöhrde und Kleine Wöhrde, die auch auf der Gemarkung lagen. Schönewörde blieb lange Zeit eine kleine, nur langsam wachsende Siedlung, die 1811 erst 30 Höfe bzw. abgabepflichtige Feuerstellen hatte. Die erste Volkszählung im gleichen Jahr ergab 233 Einwohner – allerdings schätzen manche Chronisten aufgrund alter Steuerlisten die Bevölkerung nur auf 180 bis 190 Personen.
