Schönewörde si trova tra i parchi naturali Südheide ed Elm-Lappwald lungo l'Ise. Il comune fa parte della comunità di Wesendorf, che ha la sua sede amministrativa nel comune di Wesendorf.
Il comune è stato menzionato per la prima volta nel 1318 come Sconenworden; appartiene agli insediamenti del periodo di Rode più recente; nello sviluppo, probabilmente influenzato da immigrazioni da deserti come Große Wöhrde e Kleine Wöhrde, che si trovavano anch'essi nel territorio. Schönewörde è rimasta a lungo un piccolo insediamento, che cresceva solo lentamente, con solo 30 fattorie o fonti tassabili nel 1811. Il primo censimento nello stesso anno ha rivelato 233 abitanti – tuttavia, alcuni cronisti stimano la popolazione solo tra 180 e 190 persone, basandosi su vecchie liste fiscali.
