Seine dokumentierte Baugeschichte erstreckt sich auf einen Zeitraum von über 800 Jahren. Die Verwaltungsbauten des Historischen Rathauses sind ein Baudenkmal im Sinne des Denkmalschutzgesetzes Nordrhein-Westfalens .
