Hawangen liegt etwa fünf Kilometer östlich, auf halbem Weg zwischen Memmingen und Ottobeuren, in der Region Donau-Iller in Oberschwaben.
Hawangen gehörte zum frühen Besitz der 764 gegründeten Reichsabtei Ottobeuren. Mit dem Reichsdeputationshauptschluss von 1803 kam der Ort zu Bayern. Im Zuge der Verwaltungsreformen im Königreich Bayern entstand mit dem Gemeindeedikt von 1818 die heutige Gemeinde.
