Isselburg ist eine Stadt im Kreis Borken in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie hat 11.196 Einwohner[1]. Zu den Nachbarstädten gehören Bocholt und Doetinchem in den Niederlanden. Isselburg wurde um 1300 als "Yselberge" erwähnt. Im 14. Jahrhundert muss hier eine Burg gestanden haben. Diese Burg wurde um 1410 vom Grafen von Kleve ausgebaut und dann "Neyenborg" genannt. Im Jahr 1441 verlieh Herzog Adolf I. von Kleve die Stadtrechte auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Gemeinde. Zusammen mit dem Herzogtum Kleve gehörte Isselburg 1609 zu Brandenburg. In den Jahren 1624, 1669 und 1697 fiel die Stadt großen Stadtbränden zum Opfer. Reste der alten Stadtmauer und der einzige erhaltene Wehrturm in der Nähe der katholischen Kirche zeugen von der Größe der Burg, die die Herren von Kleve als östlichsten Vorposten ihres Einflussbereichs gründeten.
