Als Naherholungs- und Freizeitzentrum bietet der Blausteinsee vielseitige Möglichkeiten: Segeln, Surfen, Tauchen, Wandern, Skaten und einiges mehr. Für Radwanderer stehen zahlreiche beschilderte Radwanderrouten zur Verfügung. Auch das Schwimmen ist in Ufernähe in einem ausgewiesenen Teilbereich auf eigene Gefahr erlaubt. Auf der Seebühne finden regelmäßig Musik- und Theater-Events statt. Bei Sonnenschein laden die Terrassen und Promenaden direkt am Wasser zur Ruhe und Entspannung ein.-#xD;

Entstanden ist der rund 100 Hektar und bis zu 46 Meter tiefe große Blausteinsee im Zuge des Braunkohle-Abbaus in der Region Indeland. Er liegt im so genannten Restloch des ehemaligen Tagebaus Zukunft, die Befüllung mit Oberflächenwasser begann im Jahr 1994.
