Das Neandertal ist ein weitgehend unbebauter Talabschnitt der Düssel auf dem Gebiet der Städte Erkrath und Mettmann, rund zehn Kilometer östlich von Düsseldorf. Die ursprüngliche, einst weithin bekannte Schlucht von knapp einem Kilometer Länge wurde im 19. Jahrhundert durch den Abbau von Kalkstein vollständig zerstört. Unmittelbar danach erlangte das Neandertal weltweit Berühmtheit durch den Fund fossiler Überreste eines Urzeitmenschen aus dem Pleistozän, der als Neandertaler Namensgeber dieser Spezies wurde.
