Der Hauptfriedhof Stuttgart wurde während des Ersten Weltkriegs am 28. Januar 1918 eröffnet. Er ist mit einer Fläche von 29,6 Hektar und 15.000 Grabstellen der zweitgrößte Stuttgarter Friedhof. Der Friedhof ist in über 120 Abteilungen aufgeteilt.
Ein großer alter Baumbestand, teilweise in Alleen angelegt, verleiht dem Friedhof den Charakter eines Landschaftsparks. Auf dem Friedhofsgelände befinden sich mehrere Friedhofsgebäude, eine Unterstellhalle, eine Pergolalaube und allenthalben bewegliche Sitzgelegenheiten sowie Brunnen und Wasserstellen.
