Das Gymnasium Hammonense ist das älteste Gymnasium in Hamm; es hat seine Wurzeln im Akademischen Gymnasium zu Hamm.
Das Akademische Gymnasium nahm am 28. Mai 1657 seinen Lehrbetrieb auf, nachdem Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg 1655 die Gründung einer weiteren reformierten Hochschule in seinen westlichen Territorien erlaubt hatte.
