Der ist ein 696,2 m ü. NHN hoher Berg im Hegau in der Nähe des Bodensees. Auf dem Berg befindet sich die Festungsruine Hohentwiel. Er ist der Hausberg Singens und besteht hauptsächlich aus einem Phonolith-Schlotpfropfen. Vor 15 Millionen Jahren begann eine Phase aktiven Vulkanismus, in der der Hohentwiel ein Vulkan war. In einer zweiten, vor ungefähr acht Millionen Jahren beginnenden Vulkanismusphase konnte das Magma nicht mehr an die Oberfläche vordringen und bildete die charakteristische Quellkuppe, die in den Kaltzeiten des Quartärs durch Abtragungen der Gletscher freigelegt wurde. Die wichtigsten Gesteine, die den Berg aufbauen, sind Phonolith und Deckentuff. An Vegetation herrschen darauf Trockenrasen und Bewaldung vor. In den Felsen und Mauern der Ruine lebt beispielsweise die seltene Italienische Schönschrecke.
