Die Universität Kassel ist die nördlichste Universität Hessens. Die Gründung erfolgte 1971 als Gesamthochschule Kassel . Seit 2003 heißt die Hochschule Universität Kassel.
Die Forschung an der Universität ist traditionsgemäß vielfältig und interdisziplinär, z. B. seit 1978 über die unabhängig von den Fachbereichen organisierten Wissenschaftlichen Zentren. Das Forschungsprofil umfasst Schwerpunkte u. a. in Umwelt-, Klima- und Energieforschung, Informationstechnik-Gestaltung, Nanostrukturwissenschaften und Bildungsforschung.
