Die Reichsstadt Nürnberg war ein Territorium des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, dessen Eigenständigkeit sich während des 13. bis 15. Jahrhunderts in mehreren Entwicklungsschritten vollzogen hatte und das bis zum Jahr 1806 existierte.
Die Anfänge Nürnbergs sind eng mit der Entstehungsgeschichte der Burggrafschaft Nürnberg verknüpft. Sie gehen auf eine Reichsburg zurück, die in der ersten Hälfte des 11. Jahrhunderts auf einem Sandsteinfelsen nahe der Pegnitz errichtet worden war.
