Der Bahnhof Dresden-Neustadt ist nach dem Dresdner Hauptbahnhof der zweitgrößte Bahnhof der Stadt und neben diesem Fernbahnhof. Er bündelt den Bahnverkehr auf der nördlichen Elbseite und ersetzte 1901 den 1839 eingeweihten Leipziger Bahnhof in der Leipziger Vorstadt sowie den seit 1847 bestehenden Schlesischen Bahnhof. Die zeitgenössisch repräsentative Gestaltung des im Stadtteil Innere Neustadt gelegenen Bauwerks unterstreicht seine Bedeutung als Fernverkehrshalt.
Er verknüpft im Eisenbahnknoten Dresden die vom Hauptbahnhof kommende Bahnstrecke Děčín–Dresden-Neustadt mit den Strecken nach Leipzig und Görlitz, die den Verkehr in Richtung Leipzig, Berlin sowie in die Oberlausitz aufnehmen.
