Die Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Unstruttal wurde am 1. Januar 2005 gegründet. In dieser Verwaltungsgemeinschaft hatten sich Gemeinden aus den ehemaligen Verwaltungsgemeinschaften Freyburger Land, Laucha an der Unstrut und Mittlere Unstrut zusammengeschlossen. Sitz der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft war Freyburg .
