Der Bahnhof Steinach liegt an den Bahnstrecken Neustadt –Steinach bei Rothenburg, Steinach bei Rothenburg–Dombühl und Treuchtlingen–Würzburg. Er gehört zur Bahnhofskategorie 4.Steinach bei Rothenburg ob der Tauber ist ein Ortsteil der Gemeinde Gallmersgarten. Der Bahnhof liegt im Verbundgebiet des Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg.
Die Strecke Würzburg–Ansbach bestand bereits vor dem Bahnhofsgebäude. Sie wurde am 1. Juli 1864 eröffnet. Erbaut wurde der Bahnhof von 1862 bis Ende 1864. Somit wurde er im Jahr 1865 an die Strecke angebunden. Das Stationsgebäude ist ein dreigeschossiger Walmdachbau mit niedrigen Seitenflügeln, Bruchsteinbau mit Hausteingliederung und Zahnschnittfries in Ziegelstein. Im November 1873 folgte dann die Strecke nach Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Im Jahr 1898 folgte der Anschluss an die Strecke nach Neustadt an der Aisch.
