In den Jahren 1870 bis 1872 wurden diverse Mutungsbohrungen westlich von Buer fündig. Unter Leitung des Essener Kaufmanns Hugo Honigmann wurde durch Anteilseigner aus Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr und Buer am 24. März 1873 die Gewerkschaft des Steinkohlenbergwerks Hugo gegründet und am 2. April 1874 bergrechtlich genehmigt.
