Die Bucht ist nach der am Ostufer gelegenen Ortschaft Wreechen benannt. An der Südseite befinden sich die Ansiedlungen Glowitz und Neukamp.
Das als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesene Gewässer hat eine Fläche von 77 Hektar und gehört zum Biosphärenreservat Südost-Rügen.
