Die Eider war bis Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mit 188 Kilometern der längste Fluss in Schleswig-Holstein. Durch den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal ist der Lauf der Eider östlich von Rendsburg unterbrochen: Die obere Eider , hydrologisch auch als Flussgebietseinheit Eider definiert, geht bei Achterwehr in den Ringkanal über, der östlich des Flemhuder Sees von Süden in den Nord-Ostsee-Kanal mündet. Mit diesem gehört sie zum Einzugsgebiet der Elbe. Die Obereider in Rendsburg ist ein Teil des alten Eiderlaufs, aber heutzutage eine Bucht des Nord-Ostsee-Kanals. Die untere Eider beginnt im Nordwesten der Rendsburger Altstadt nahe der Einmündung des Rendsburger Stadtsees. Als direkter Nordseezufluss trägt sie die Gewässerkennzahl 952.
