Das Führerhauptquartier Tannenberg lag an der Schwarzwaldhochstraße in der Nähe der Alexanderschanze auf dem fast 1.000 Meter hohen Kniebis im nördlichen Schwarzwald . Heute liegt das Areal mit den Resten des ehemaligen FHQ Tannenberg in der Kulisse des Nationalparks Schwarzwald.
Tannenberg entstand während der Vorbereitungen des Frankreichfeldzuges am Rande einer hochmoorartigen Lichtung nahe dem Hotel Alexanderschanze. Ausgeführt durch die Organisation Todt und einige private Subunternehmen, begannen die Bauarbeiten am 1. Oktober 1939. Es handelte sich nicht um einen Neubau, sondern um den Ausbau und die Erweiterung einer schon vorhandenen Anlage des Westwalles.
