Kempten ist eine kreisfreie Stadt mit über 70.000 Einwohnern im Allgäu im bayerischen Regierungsbezirk Schwaben. Sie ist das Ober-, Schul- und Verwaltungszentrum der umliegenden Wirtschafts-, Urlaubs- und Planungsregion Allgäu mit rund 470.000 Einwohnern. Kempten ist nach Augsburg die zweitgrößte Stadt des Regierungsbezirks und gilt als eine der ältesten Städte Deutschlands, da sie bereits in der Antike in einem schriftlichen Dokument genannt wurde. Kempten wird seit den 1930ern verstärkt als Allgäuer Ort genannt, dennoch wird dort mehr ein schwäbischer als ein Allgäuer Dialekt gesprochen, letzterer kann erst südlich von Immenstadt im Allgäu in erkennbarem Maße festgestellt werden.
Das Stadtbild ist durch das jahrhundertelange Nebeneinander zweier Stadtkerne geprägt: zum einen die sogenannte Stiftsstadt der Fürstabtei Kempten, zum anderen die Reichsstadt Kempten. Die noch heute erkennbare gegensätzliche Grund- und Aufrissstruktur macht Kempten zur Doppelstadt.
