Donauwörth ist eine Große Kreisstadt im schwäbischen Landkreis Donau-Ries und der Sitz des Landratsamts.Im späten Mittelalter und in der frühen Neuzeit war Schwäbischwerd eine selbstständige Reichsstadt im Heiligen Römischen Reich, was sich im Wappen der heutigen Stadt Donauwörth widerspiegelt.
Die Stadt liegt im nördlichen Schwaben, an den Mündungen von Kessel und Wörnitz sowie Zusam und Schmutter in die hiesig von Südwest nach Ost verlaufende Donau; in diesen Fluss mündet etwa 12 km östlich der Stadt der von Süden kommende Lech. Donauwörth liegt an den Südwestausläufern der Fränkischen Alb mit dem Naturpark Altmühltal und an den Ostausläufern der Schwäbischen Alb. Jenseits der Donau befindet sich ein paar Kilometer südlich der Stadt der Naturpark Augsburg-Westliche Wälder.
