Gunzenhausen ist eine Stadt im mittelfränkischen Landkreis Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. Der staatlich anerkannte Erholungsort liegt am Altmühlsee. Mit etwa 16.000 Einwohnern ist Gunzenhausen die zweitgrößte, von der Fläche her mit 82,73 Quadratkilometern drittgrößte Gemeinde des Landkreises.
Gunzenhausen liegt im Nordwesten des Landkreises Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in der Region Westmittelfranken, mitten im Fränkischen Seenland und südöstlich des Altmühlsees auf einer Höhe von 416 m ü. NHN, am südöstlichen Rand der Frankenhöhe. Diese bildet nach Nordwesten eine weite Fläche, die sich sanft nach Südosten neigt. Die Gesteine des Untergrunds entstammen der mittleren Keuperzeit . Südlich und östlich der Umgebung Gunzenhausens erheben sich die Jura-Berge der Fränkischen Alb, z. B. der Hahnenkamm.
