Der Bezirk Altona ist der westlichste der sieben Bezirke der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg. Er ist großenteils identisch mit der bis 1938 selbstständigen Stadt Altona – abgesehen davon, dass Eidelstedt und Stellingen-Langenfelde heute zum hamburgischen Bezirk Eimsbüttel gehören und der Grenzverlauf zu St. Pauli einige Veränderungen erfahren hat.
Altona grenzt im Süden und Osten an den Bezirk Hamburg-Mitte, im Nordosten an den Bezirk Eimsbüttel und im Norden und Westen an das Land Schleswig-Holstein. Im Südwesten verläuft in der Elbmitte und über die unbewohnte Elbinsel Neßsand die Grenze Altonas zum Land Niedersachsen.
