Das Heinrich-Pette-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Experimentelle Virologie widmet sich der Erforschung der Biologie humaner Virusarten, der Pathogenese von Viruserkrankungen, der Abwehrreaktion des Organismus und damit zusammenhängender Probleme.
Das HPI ist als Stiftung bürgerlichen Rechts eine gemeinnützige und selbstständige Forschungseinrichtung, die seit 1995 der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft angehört. Zuwendungsgeber ist auf Bundesseite das Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, die Länderseite wird von der Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung in Hamburg vertreten.
